Wakers on Jones Street

Fletcher Hartsell, Andrew Brock, Jeff Barnhart, Bryan Holloway

Chris Fitzsimon today rightly calls out four North Carolina right-wing extremists, all elected officials in the General Assembly. In any sane world, these legislators would be embarrassed by their bizarre rhetoric, but unfortunately, sane would be the last word I'd used to describe their approach to public service.

"We have terrorists running America…If we allow it, these same folks will inflict more damage on our nation than any suicide bomber could ever hope for…"

Those paranoid delusions are not the work of an anonymous commenter on an obscure right-wing website whose owners are difficult to discover. They are from an article a couple of weeks ago on wakeupamerica.com, a website run by two Republican members of the General Assembly, Senator Andrew Brock and Representative Bryan Holloway.

Go read the rest of Chris's commentary, but don't eat first. The subject matter is guaranteed to turn your stomach.

If you're a masochist

and want to understand how truly depraved Brock's Wakers are, here's a place to start

.

Fletcher Hartsell

Senator Hartsell is not of that ilk and so the referenced membership is surprising. He is among the most able and clear thinking Republicans in the General Assembly.

Maybe he was having a lapse of sanity

All I know is what I read. Right Change is not as odious as the Wakers, but they're of the same radical mindset. Hartsell is a board member.

RightChange ran ads in a Congressional race earlier this year that featured an attack of the "50-foot Pelosi" and is now attacking Florida Governor and Senate candidate Charlie Crist.

Documents filed with the IRS show that RightChange spent just under $300,000 in the second quarter of this year, most of it on consultants. One of them is Tim Pittman, an official in administration of Republican Governor Jim Martin in the 1980s.

The other board members of RightChange are Republican legislators, Senator Fletcher Hartsell and Representative Jeff Barnhart. Neither has ever explained their involvement with the group or how they feel about the offensive ads it runs.

Republicans calling Democrats out for misbehavior is all well and good, but Republicans repudiating Republicans for offensive speech never happens. I've not heard one person step up to say Andrew Brock and the Wakers pyramid scheme are flat out nuts. And I'm not holding my breath.
