Today's $50 million commitment by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's philanthropy to the Sierra Club's Beyond Coal Campaign will be used in North Carolina to promote offshore wind, a spokeswoman says.
Bloomberg's not only a man of vision, he's got a damned fine sense of humor, too:

The story of plastic bottles

Fortunately, last October the NC legislature passed a measure banning the disposal of plastic bottles in state landfills. The ban is estimated to divert nearly 2.4 billion plastic bottles from landfills annually.

Candlestick: Free money for non profits

A quick update on our first week of Candlestick, where the NC Sierra Club leads the pack on grant-gathering with their disciplined cross-posting. The top Sierra Club post garnered 286 reads. Planned Parenthood also earned grants last week with their welcome coverage of the threats to women's freedom in Apex. Their top post had more than 400 reads. Mercury problems in the Cape Fear River

The river near a proposed cement plant in New Hanover County can't tolerate any more mercury pollution, state officials say, a judgment that could block the controversial factory from opening.
