Checking out at Trader Joe's
Submitted by James on Sun, 01/29/2012 - 10:48am
When Jane and I checked out at the grocery story in Chapel Hill on Saturday morning, the cashier commented that it looked like we were having a party. We were buying snacks and drinks for a meeting of BlueNC frontpagers later in the day.

Survey: Who should be NC's next governor?
Submitted by KatyMunger on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 2:19pmYesterday, Governor Bev Perdue surprised a lot of people with her announcement that she would not seek re-election. By this morning, plenty of people had thrown their hat into the ring to be her successor. The election season is young but we here at Progress North Carolina think it's never too early to know what the people of North Carolina think. Take our quick survey and tell us who you think should occupy the Governor's Mansion come 2013. We've given you plenty of choices to choose from. They hail from all across the political spectrum, so go ahead and indulge -- this is your chance to vote outside the box! We'll announce the results next week. Take the survey now.

Electable NC Democratic women: An embarrassment of riches
Submitted by Betsy Muse on Fri, 01/27/2012 - 10:03amYou know that feeling. The one you get when you go to thank a list of people and just know you're going to leave someone important out. I got that feeling yesterday in the mad rush to promote candidates to run for Governor. We only have a few weeks before filing begins so the race was on to recruit candidates, promote facebook pages and buy up urls. In the rush I forgot some very important people - women.
Someone threw out Janet Cowell's name and I think Elaine Marshall's name came up, so the rest of you are off the hook. For me, there is absolutely no excuse. I'm the daughter of a female politician for heaven's sake! Today, please allow me to right my wrong. The Democratic Party of North Carolina has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to strong women prepared and qualified to serve this state and its people.

The Progressive Change Campaign Committee has started an online poll asking NC'ians
Submitted by TriangleBill on Thu, 01/26/2012 - 10:41pmwhat they think re a run by Rep. Brad Miller (D-13) for Governor. (I'm tickled to say I personally had the exact same notion all on my little lonesome by about 9AM this morning...)
The link is here --> http://act.boldprogressives.org/survey/survey_miller_gov/
I think it's a fantastic idea, and I hope (there's that word again...) that we are hugely successful mounting an "Elizabeth Warren-style" draft campaign to urge the common-sense Democrat-with-a-backbone Miller to sign on!

Jack Nichols: License to Steal???
Submitted by BlewNC on Fri, 11/18/2011 - 3:20am
Former Wake County Commissioner, Jack Nichols and the North Carolina Board of Nursing are under investigation by the North Carolina State Bar, The North Carolina Attorney General's Office, the Governor's Office and the North Carolina State Auditor.
One of the 133 Counts listed in the COMPLAINT is that he stole evidence from a courthouse file.
Probably the most serious charge, however, is that he improperly orchestrated a state agency, the North Carolina Board of Nursing, to hire him as its general counsel to provide litigation services.

Detective Gary McFadden ... He has my Vote!!
Submitted by docjameson on Tue, 10/18/2011 - 12:02amDetective Gary McFadden is a living legend .
There are not many men like him. McFadden spent two decades as a homicide investigator with the Charlotte, North Carolina Police Department. His job was never 9 to 5 with assigned breaks. He witnessed the end results of some of the most brutal killings in the metro area. More importantly, he witnessed the hurt it brought to family members and friends. He spent his time off either bonding with his wife and children, tending to his two favorite hobbies - grilling out or fly fishing, or speaking out against crime. Detective McFadden continues to speak at local churches, schools, street corners, community gatherings, homeless shelters, prisons, and on the streets of low income housing. He makes a difference in lives of the people he meets and talks with.

On Reopening For Business, Or, What? No Flying Cars?
Submitted by fake consultant on Sun, 06/26/2011 - 4:14amSo I took a bit of a break this past month, and I figured by the time I came back y’all would have things sorted out: people would be surely by flying around with jet packs by now, God would have sent fires and floods to smite the unrighteous, and, if I really got lucky, Barack Obama would have “grown a pair”.
And now that I’m back, debt negotiations are about to commence between that same Barack Obama and the Republican Congressional Leadership, things like Social Security and Medicare cuts are apparently on the table in order to protect tax cuts for the rich, and certain quarters of the Republican Party aren’t even trying anymore to hide their racism.
All of which suggests that I shouldn’t be looking for a jet pack anytime soon.
But there is some good news: God is apparently working hard, and states like Oklahoma and Arizona and Florida and Georgia and Texas have been alternately aflame or aflood, apparently as a result of their unrepentant behavior…and on the economic front, New York City’s Stonewall Inn is going to make a ton of money this summer hosting weddings.
That gives us a lot to talk about…so let’s get right to it.

Perdue of no use to citizens: fails to veto NC Broadband bill
Submitted by zabouti on Fri, 05/20/2011 - 2:59pmGov Perdue has drunk Time Warner's kool-aid and says she will not veto H129, a bill forbidding government bodies in NC from creating our own Broadband networks. Now there will be even less competition to stimulate some improvements in our telecom infrastructure.
Might as well have a Republican governor. Clearly what matters is the legislature.

Remindng the governor, Teaching is an honorable profession
Submitted by persondem on Fri, 11/27/2009 - 9:58pmI am a teacher. I had no choice; both parents, two siblings and their spouses were in education in some capacity. If a gene exists for teaching, it runs rampant in my family. Of course that gene usually goes with the "struggling middle class" and the "you ain't never going to be rich" genes. Teachers know and accept such terms because Teaching is an honorable profession.
Teachers have long endured low pay; for decades it was the norm in North Carolina. I timed a career change rather well for near the beginning of this decade, NC's leadership, the governor and the GA, made increasing teacher pay a priority. During those heady days, NC creeped up to nearly 20th or so in rankings of teacher salary. Our current leadership has reversed that trend, forgetting, it would seem, that Teaching is an honorable profession.
