New twist in NC's offshore drilling debate
Show of hands: How many of you knew about this?
The prospects of hitting a trove of oil or gas (considered more likely) off our coastline are slim, perhaps one in a hundred, notes Alexander, a former Charlotte News writer, and Lazell. In 1950, they write, Exxon drilled to a depth of 10,000 feet off Cape Hatteras and found nothing. "More than 50 wells have been drilled both onshore and in coastal waters controlled by the state," including three wells in Dare and Hyde in 1965. "Neither oil nor gas was found in any of these operations," they added.

No advances in 60 years?
So, there haven't been any advances in subterranean mapping over the past 45-60 years that might increase the knowledge of what we are likely to find and where we can find it?
There are many good reasons not to drill to have to resort to a silly argument like this one. I hear crap like this from folks and it almost makes me want to chant "drill baby drill"....almost.
The most liberal estimate I've seen
is enough new oil and gas to handle three years of US gluttony. That's based on all the advances you can think of in mapping, as well as a lot of wishful thinking.
There's no legitimate case to be made for the stupidity of drilling off the NC coast ... unless you consider personal and corporate greed a legitimate case.
Do good. Be nice. Have fun.
I'm against drilling
...but I'm also against this lame argument that test drills done 60 years ago are the reason we shouldn't drill.
Yeah, there's a lot of "crap"
out there on this subject, which is why so many people in this state think drilling is the answer to all their problems.
Are you telling me they "don't need to know" that over fifty attempts to find oil failed to produce a single drop?
Offshore drilling
This entire debate is crazy. Are we just going to not acknowledge the Gulf disaster? Offshore drilling is not the answer to our energy needs. We have a lot of on-land sources of oil where we as a nation can drill if we see that as a dire need. It is due time we opened up the land sources for drilling if our only other alternative is to drill offshore.
This is crazy.
Not the only reason drilling off NC is crazy
Even in the unlikely event that oil were found off our coast, it would not particularly benefit North Carolina. It would add to the profits of a global oil conglomerate and be a miniscule part of global supply.
Environmental problems aside, does anyone think it would make a discernable difference in global oil supply or prices at the pump in NC (or anywhere)? No.
We'd be far better off investing in public transit and better land planning.
Use our coastline for offshore wind that can displace some of the coal that provides much of our state's electricity. And invest in energy efficiency, waste to energy, and solar. That will bring jobs and clean air here, where we live.
Never let a make-believe crisis go to waste
Yeah, it's common knowledge but it still didn't keep the sheeple from getting all excited over nothing. The peanut gallery is so easy to get fired up. The sheeple never need facts. It always amazes me how easy all of this is. So easy in fact, I'm almost considering running for office; make up some nonsense, claim the other guy is a racist, and BAM!, your living in Washington DC off of someone else's dime - what a great gig! I think being a Senator has got to be the biggest sham job in the country.
