N.C. legislators ignore discrimination, honor Boy Scouts

On Monday, both the North Carolina House and Senate adopted resolutions honoring the Boy Scouts of America in recognition of their 101st anniversary yesterday.

Unsurprisingly, neither resolution (House, Senate) mentions the Scouts' anti-gay and religious discrimination against youth members and adult leaders. And, unsurprisingly yet again, not a single member of the legislature had the courage or conviction to vote against the resolution.

Dear state lawmakers, do you actually care about children -- all children -- or just the straight and religious ones?

Duh

Dear state lawmakers, do you actually care about children -- all children -- or just the straight and religious ones?

Sorry Matt. The Tarheel Taliban are sending a clear and simple message to North Carolina gays. You don't matter, you don't count, you don't mean anything. Unless you're a Christian breeder, you're nothing.

Wasn't just the GOP

Not a single member of the legislature voted against the resolutions. Plenty of Dems to blame, too. Not just the GOP.

The reason I left BSA some years ago

was their idiotic approach to sexual orientation. Again it is the attitudes and theologies of some older white males which prevail in BSA against deceny and common sense. Older white males, have I just defined the GA?

I heard before that

the UK's version of boy scouts was more open than in the US. And have heard the theory that in general that any version of the boy scouts in different countries tends to reflects its military's policy. Hopefully once DADT repeal goes through, it will start conversations about change in organizations that emulate them in some ways.

Yuppers

The U.K. Boy Scouts are more open, and have no problem with out gay leaders or members. Similarly, the majority of Boy Scouting organizations in the world have no problem with gay leaders or members. On the issue of Scouting and gays, I'm afraid the U.S., once again, finds itself in the same boat as tyrannical theocracies and dictatorships.

As I life long Democrat

I often wonder how the party has got into the mess it is in. I fail to see the purpose in attacking the Boy Scouts, as a former Boy Scout and current Boy Scout leader, I know of no organazation which doe a better job of grooming our young men. Which takes some boys from very bad circumstances and gives them a taste of what great things they can do. The reason why no Democrats voted against this was two fold, first of all it is beyond stupid politics to do such a thing, but also many of those legislators are former Scouts themselves. Yes you take an oath to God when you join the Scouts so yes to oath is taken very seriously, also since ninty percent of scouts are under the age of 15, sexual abstinance is required. Having said that their are two scouts in our troup who have "two moms" and they are in no way treated any different than those who come from normal family life, or divorced families or even those who never knew their fathers.

Does anyone have a can of Bigot-Begone?

It seems the Boy Scouts long and illustrious history of running to court to keep teh gayz out is too easily forgotten.

This isn't a partisan issue. The bloggers here have taken all members of the General Assembly to task for overlooking the explicitly-bigoted policies of the Boy Scouts.

Volunteer Adult Leadership
Boy Scouts of America believes that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the obligations in the Scout Oath and Law to be morally straight and clean in thought, word, and deed. Scouting’s moral position with respect to homosexual conduct accords with the moral positions of many millions of Americans and with religious denominations to which a majority of Americans belong. Because of these views concerning the morality of homosexual conduct, Boy Scouts of America believes that a known or avowed homosexual is not an appropriate role model of the Scout Oath and Law for adolescent boys.

Employment
With respect to positions limited to professional Scouters or, because of their close relationship to the mission of Scouting, positions limited to registered members of the Boy Scouts of America, acceptance of the Declaration of Religious Principle, the Scout Oath, and the Scout Law is required. Accordingly, in the exercise of its constitutional right to bring the values of Scouting to youth members, Boy Scouts of America will not employ atheists, agnostics, known or avowed homosexuals, or others as professional Scouters or in other capacities in which such employment would tend to interfere with its mission of reinforcing the values of the Scout Oath and the Scout Law in young people.

Youth Leadership
Boy Scouts of America believes that homosexual conduct is inconsistent with the obligations in the Scout Oath and Scout Law to be morally straight and clean in thought, word, and deed. The conduct of youth members must be in compliance with the Scout Oath and Law, and membership in Boy Scouts of America is contingent upon the willingness to accept Scouting’s values and beliefs. Most boys join Scouting when they are 10 or 11 years old. As they continue in the program, all Scouts are expected to take leadership positions. In the unlikely event that an older boy were to hold himself out as homosexual, he would not be able to continue in a youth leadership position.

Nothing says "social responsibility" or "build character" or "citizenship" like some hard-core, written bigotry, now does it?

Thanks

Thanks for posting the info... As a former Scout myself (booted in 2000 after coming out and starting a GSA at my high school), I can testify to that "unlikely event that an older boy were to hold himself out as homosexual." The BSA is also disingenuous: they'll kick out any youth member due to their sexual orientation particularly because advancing in any rank always requires a "youth leadership position." (Ironically, I was the troop's youth chaplain lol).
