Banned, not cut

The more I read about the Planned Parenthood suit against the State of North Carolina, the more convinced I am that the state's position is indefensible. Check out this post by Paige Johnson and help spread the word. The state didn't just cut funding to this excellent health service provider, the state instituted a ban against doing business with them. This is classic Republican over-reaching, and it is already costing taxpayers who have to fund a losing defense.

This seems like an issue of constitutional interest, so I stopped by Bob Orr's shop to check out the uproar. Not. The silence is deafening at the NC Institute for Constitutional Law, as is usually the case on matters of importance to women.

This should be of importance to everyone.

Just sayin'.

Everyone

Point taken.

That said, I do believe women have much at risk in this battle. There is a natural progression that follows criminalizing abortion in a state where capital punishment is legal is clear. Women who have abortions will eventually be sentenced to death for premeditated murder.

People think I'm over-stating this case, but I am not. Anti-abortion fetishists have been around as long as women have been having abortions, which is basically forever. Ever since men took over the business of being god, things have been going downhill.

Yes, you're right.

Anti-abortion fetishists would tell you that the woman who had an abortion was being god, or the doctor who performed this legal medical procedure was being god.

I don't see it that way, obviously.

And I don't think you're overstating the case at all. It's already fairly common to hear of people being tried on 2 counts of homicide when they murder a pregnant woman - which I think is meant to appease feelings, not to get justice. But how far do we have to go from there to try a doctor who performs an abortion?

And now the state puts "Choose Life" on license plates? Maybe they plan to use the funds from *that* to defend against the suit.

Truth Out - Louisiana

The irrepressible Bobby Jindal:

Jindal said he couldn't understand why anyone would oppose the bill, comparing the new notices to Miranda warnings for women who receive abortions - a constitutionally protected procedure - to criminals:

"When officers arrest criminals today, they are read their rights," he said. "Now if we're giving criminals their basic rights and they have to be informed of those rights, it seems to me only common sense we would have to do the same thing for women before they make the choice about whether to get an abortion."
